Comment: Sub Titled 'Technique with
Vladimir Samsunov' and a book that is worthy
of the world'sNo. 1 player. In my opinion this is the best TT manual
written up to this time. But if it's anecdotes, TT yarns, and action
photos
you're interested in, then best try
elsewhere. |

Boggan Year of
Publication: 2000 Edition: 2nd Edition Cover: Soft Laminated

243 Comment: WOW! A monumental work.
Brilliantly fahioned with anecdotes,
memorabilia, photos, and all manner of goodies. What more could
you
want. A good read, even for a limey. I believe the 'History'
is now up to
Volume 10 ( and still more to come) but at a high price. My finances
will not
run to buying every volume.

Publication: 2001 Printing : US Cover: Hard Cover with DJ Pages:

245 Comment: The author chronicles his long
love affair with TT, and some of it's
legendary players. A great read for the older afficicionado, but my
17 year old TT nut, found it all a drag. Personally I can't wait for
the
next one. |

SERIES Author: Deepak Jain Publisher: Khel Sahitya
Kendra, Delhi Year of
Publication: 2001 Cover: Hard Back Pages:
196 Source:

252
Comment: A good basic content, well
suited to the beginner but short on the
techniques required for the advancing champion. Spoilt by the
absence
of photographs. This book is identical to Bibliography no. 297
except
for the change in Cover and
Title. |

the tension
and dramas of these
events, |

District TTA Year of
Publication: 2001 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages:
41
Source: BH No.
270
Comment: A history of the Liverpool and
District TT League for the period 1926-2001.
A labour of love by their Secretary Tony Harris that is full of
anecdotes,
tales, records and a good read even if you are not a Scouse.
Well researched
and illustrated in Black and
White. |
 |
|
Bibliography: No. 294 Title: THE FIRST FIFTY YEARS Author: John Bromhead Publisher: Bromsgrove,
Redditch & DTTA Year of
Publication: 2002
Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages:
135
Source: BH No.
267
Comment: A potted history of the first
50 years of the Bromsgrove,Redditch and
District TTA. There are lots of tales and yarns of this minor
Worcestershire
League. Not especially suuccessful in terms of great players
produced or
trophies won, but it seems to be a great deal of friendly fun. How
many
thousands of other Leagues must be like the
BRDTTA. |

Publication: 2002
Edition: 3rd Edition Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages:

259 Comment: When I ordered
this book I expected to receive a treatise on the ability
and agility of dinosaurs, to discover if they had the mental
and
physical attitudes necessary to indulge in a form of sport. What I
got
was a childrens cartoon book of dinosaurs showing them taking part
in fishing, cricket, dancing, etc. Not really what I had in
mind. |

|
Bibliography: No. 297 Title: TABLE TENNIS - SKILLS AND
RULES Author: Deepak Jain Publisher: Khel Sahitya Kendra, Delhi Year of

Publisher: Khel
Sahitya Kendra, Delhi Year of
Publication: 2003 Cover: Hard Back and DJ Pages:
108
Source: BH No.
254 Comment: Basic techniques
well presented with some sketched diagrams to aid the
learning process. Most of theadvice offered is very dated and the
references are
to players like Barna, Bergman and Tereba. Some more modern advice
from Waldner,
Boll, Samsonov etc. would be better received. No
photographs. |
 |
|
Bibliography: No. 299 Title: TEACHING TABLE TENNIS Author: Gail McCulloch
Publisher:
Sportbreak, Cheshire Year of
Publication: 2003 Cover: Laminated Soft Cover Pages:
77
Source: BH No.
255 Comment: A good book for
introducing the game to schoolchildren, and full of tips
and hints for the aspiring coach. Endorsed by the English Schools
TTA. |
 |
|
Bibliography: No. 300 Title: WHEN THE FEELING DECIDES Author: Jens Fellke
Publisher:
Sportforlaget, Sweden Year of
Publication: 2003 Cover: Laminated Soft Cover Pages:
237
Source: BH No.
256 Comment: A biography of
Jan Ove Waldner, the most successful player of modern times.
There is no doubting the Swede's credentials to being amongst the
all time
greats, but I have a problem with 'The greatest player in TT
History'.
Nevertheless the biography is interesting and informative and well
worth the read. |

2005 2008 Pages:

260 Comment:
A follow up
to the highly successful TT fascination of 2001. This time it
covers 2001-2003, but it is equally as vibrant and exciting as it's
predecessor. |
 |
|
Bibliography: No. 302 Title: ITTF-IPTTC LEVEL 1 COACHING MANUAL Author: Glenn Tepper Publisher: ITTF Year
of
Publication: 2004 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages:
414
Source: BH No.
277 Comment:
A new
coaching manual with 304 pages for the able bodied player and
a
further 110 pages for the players with disabilities. A massive work
here
and well presented bu very, very basic. The first edition in English
was produced
in 2004 and it was then revised in the same year, French
language versions followed, and then a Spanish one. 2006 saw a
revised
English one and in 2007 a Sixth revised edition was published in
English.
I have chosen to list just the sixth
edition. |

Bibliography: No. 303 Title: TABLE TENNIS FASCINATION lll Author: ITTF
Publisher: ITTF Year
of
Publication: 2005 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages:
186
Source: BH No.
275 Comment:
Another in
the series of what now seems to be apublication every
two years of some of the best TT photos you are ever likely to see.
It seems to be heavily biased towards the Asian players, but
they do win most of
the major events. Great stuff! Evocative of the passions surrounding
the major championships. |
 |
|
Bibliography: No. 304 Title: HANK ZIPZER- MY SECRET LIFE AS A PING PONG
WIZARD Author: Henry Winkler and Liz Oliver
Publisher: Grosset
& Dunlap, New York Year of
Publication: 2005 Cover: Soft Cover Pages:
158
Source: BH No.
271 Comment:
A schoolboy
story-in the Hank Zipzer series- of the sef-styled Worlds
Greatest Underachiever and his new found love of Ping Pong. An
entertaining tale subsequently pulished in the UK in 2008.
|

|
|
Bibliography: No. 305 Title: HOW TO COACH TABLE TENNIS Author: Dr. A. K. Srivastava
Publisher: Sports
Publications, Delhi Year of
Publication: 2006 Cover: Laminated Hard Cover Pages:
72
Source: BH No.
266 Comment:
When I saw
the cover photo of Jill Hammersley c.1978 I thought this
was a book from the 1970's which I had missed. I am afraid not. The
text
is equally dated and consists of some not very sound advice and a
not
very well organised rules
summary. |

1991 1995 2000 2002 2006 Comment: For the first time ever (the
series started in1951 and has gone through
at least 28 editions and reprints) - the format changes from
landscape to
portrait format. As you would expect the latest is the best so far,
the
teachings are succinct and simple, and the photos are good. I
enjoyed it. |

|
Bibliography: No. 307 Title: TABLE TENNIS-AN OVERVIEW Author: Chris Andrews
Publisher: Chris
Andrews Year of
Publication: 2007 Cover: Laminated Soft Cover Pages:
159
Source: BH No.
261 Comment:
An overview
is probably an erroneous title as there is no attention paid to
associations other than the ETTA. The book is scant on playing
advice,
but could be useful for it's extensive lists of playing records, club
listings,
league listings and
websites. |

of
Publication: 2008 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages:

Source: BH No.
280 Comment:
I have never
met Mr Molodzoff who is a French National Coach. If I ever
do meet him I must congratulate him on an excellent job. There
should be some very
good players coming along
shortly. |

Press Year of
Publication: 2009 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages:

Source: BH No.
262 Comment:
A well
written, well illustated handbook with lots of up to the minute
advice from the former England Junior Jenny Cornock, a
fellow Brummy.
But there again I may be
biased. |

Publisher: Human
Kinetics Year of
Publication: 2009 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages:
203
Source: BH No.
263 Comment:
An impressive
well written coaching book. Good explanations and good techniques.
I would have enjoyed seeing some action photos from
the top players, which I find help to enthuse and excite the
beginners. |

|
|
Bibliography: No. 312 Title: OGI - THE LIFE OF ICHIRO OGIMURA Author: Mitsuru Jojima Publisher: Kodansha,
Japan Year of
Publication: 2009 Cover: Soft Cover with DJ Pages:
372
Source: BH No.
264 Comment:
A translation
from the Japanese original of 2007 to commemorate the life
of one of the all time greats of Table Tennis. The book is full of
stories
and yarns and is a very good read. I don't know if the original book
had any photos,
this one certainly doesn't and I can't help feeling that there are
so many excellent shots of this Superstar which would have taken
this
book to a new and better dimension.

Publisher: R J
Communications Year of
Publication: 2009 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages:
274
Source: BH No.
265 Comment:
A compilation
of various yarns, stories, tips and quotes from the pen of one
of the top US coaches. An interesting read and some sound advice.
Why have I got this phobia about books with photos
that are absent or inadequate?
Surely in 2009 you could justifiably expect to see colour
photos. |
 |
|
Bibliography: No. 314 Title: HANK ZIPZER- MY SECRET LIFE AS A PING PONG
WIZARD Author: Henry Winkler and Liz Oliver
Publisher: Walker
Books, London Year of
Publication: 2009 Cover: Soft Cover Pages:

fun. |

|
Bibliography: No. 315 Title: TABLE TENNIS FROM A TO Z Author: Dimosthenis Messinis
Publisher:
Dimosthenis Messinis, Athens Year of
Publication: 2000 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages:
165
Source: BH No.
282 Comment:
The English
Language version of the Greek book by the National Coach of
Greece.
Some good stuff here, a good technical book. However I found some of
the practise
exercises very hard to understand. I suspect something got lost in
translation - they
didn't seem to do Kalinikos Creanga too much
damage. |

|
|
Bibliography: No. 316 Title: HUNGARIAN TABLE TENNIS PLAYERS Author: LLC Books
Publisher: LLC
Books, USA Year of
Publication: 2010 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages:
34
Source: BH No.
283 Comment:
This is one
of several books to be used as a reference book on some of the
best
players of that country. Not of any interest
whatsoever. Leave well alone. How can you
a book of the best Hungarian players that misses out Jonyer,
Klampar and
Gergely. Junk! |

|
|
Bibliography: No. 317 Title: THE MIGHTY WALTZER Author: Howard Jacobson
Publisher: Vintage
Books,UK Year of
Publication: 2000 Cover: Paperback
Format
Other Edition: See H/back 1999 Pages:
387
Source: BH No.
284 Comment: A paperback version of Mr
Jacobson's 1999 novel. A different cover picture doesn't
make it any less funny. |

|
|
Bibliography: No. 318 Title: A PRINCIPLES APPROACH TO TABLE TENNIS Author: Dann Olsen with Kyongsook Kim Publisher: The PATT
Institute, USA Year of
Publication: 2009 Cover: Laminated Soft Cover Pages:
525
Source: BH No.
286 Comment: A new approach most certainly.
Some good well thought out theories here and
as you might assume from the Title a systematic strategy that would
benefit most
players. You would think that with this 525 page monster book, there
might be room
for a few photographs. The book mentions visualisation as a
powerful tool, I agree, so
where are the photos.
|

|
|
Bibliography: No. 319 Title: PATT NOTES Author: Dann Olsen with Kyongsook Kim Publisher: The PATT
Institute, USA Year of
Publication: 2010 Cover: Laminated Soft Cover Pages:
251
Source: BH No.
287 Comment: A selection of essays on Table
Tennis as published on the PATT website.
Some great thoughts and plenty of room for discussion and debate. A
highly
entertaining read. |

of
Publication: 2009 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages: 88
Source: BH
No. 288 Comment: Interesting short biographies of
all the great Hungarian World Champions.
It isn't until I saw them all listed out, that I quite
appreciated what a large part
Hungary played in the development of our sport.

|
Bibliography: No. 321 Title: IN MEMORIAM Author: Robert Szentgyorgyi Publisher:Author Year of
Publication: 2010 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages: 130
Source: BH No. 289 Comment: I enjoyed the book but I am not
convinced with the idea of writing simply
about Jewish players. Were there not any non Jewish Hungarian
players in this period? |

|
|
Bibliography: No. 322 Title: TABLE TENNIS TACTICS Author: Klaus-M. Geske & Jens Mueller Publisher: Meyer &
Meyer, Germany Year of
Publication: 2010 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages: 118
Source: BH No. 290 Comment: All the Table Tennis books I have
read, cover every aspect of the game, from stroke
production through to tactics, anecdotes, biographies,
rules, etc. How
refreshing then to come across a book which deals only with the
tactical side of our
sport. An original and nicely presented book with good advice
and excellent
photographs. |

|
|
Bibliography: No. 323 Title: THE SMALLEST COMPETITOR Author: Lois Pagliaro Publisher: Xlibris
Corporation, USA Year of
Publication: 2010 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages: 104
Source: BH No. 291 Comment: A biography of 4 times USA
Champion Louis Pagliaro. Lots of biographical notes,
anecdotes, photographs from the pen of his daughter Lois. The
interesting part
for me is the stories of Pagliaro and his US team mates from the
time when the US
had a number of the best players in the world; Schiff, Miles,
Cartland, McClure,
Reisman, Aarons, and of course Louis
Pagliaro. |

|
|
Bibliography: No. 324 Title: KILLER PING-PONG - SURVIVING LIFE
AT HOME Author: David Lawrence Publisher: Scripture
Union Year of
Publication: 2001 Cover: Soft Cover Pages: 111
Source: BH No. 292 Comment: A One of those infuriating little
books that you buy hoping to find a content largely devoted to Table Tennis, only to find a teenage
humour of questions and answers batted
to and fro between parents and their offsprings. Only a passing
reference to
our
game. |

|
|
Bibliography: No. 325 Title: EVERYTHING YOU KNOW IS PONG Author: Roger Bennett / Eli Horowitz Publisher: it Books Year
of
Publication: 2010 Cover: Hard Laminated Cover Pages: 258
Source: BH No. 293 Comment: A treasure trove of table tennis
miscellany. A must-have for all T.T. enthusiasts. Lots of
yarns, anecdotes, potted histories, photographs, cuttings, even T.T.
Nudists ( I kid you not!).
What a delight
- it may not be to everyone's taste but it
is a great book for dipping into for
some pleasurable reading.

Source: BH No. 296 Comment: A really good coaching
book. It gives some wonderful photographs and some sound
coaching advice. he question and answer text can sometimes
make a prolonged reading
session difficult, but
overall this book is the definitive book of
modern Table
Tennis.

ARE Author: David Buonaguidi Publisher: Karmarama Year
of
Publication: 2005 Cover: Soft Cover Pages: 57

one. All good fun from the exploits of Karmarama 2

top London advertising agencies and the book is penned by the
advertising guru and TT fanatic Dave
Buonaguidi.

Publisher: ITTF Year
of

Source: BH No.299 Comment: A short booklet published to cope with the
recent ruling removing 'speed' glues from our sport and
the new rules of governance concerning the fixing of rubbers and the
control of harmful substances.
Very important but intensely
boring.

Bibliography: No. 333 Title: POINT OF NO RETURN Author: Jens

Year of
Publication: 2009 Cover: Soft Cover Pages: 188
Source: BH No.301 Comment: An illuminating book by the Swedish journalist
who is also the Public Relations Manager for ESN
Elastomer the German TT rubber producing Company. The book details
the history of our sport
over the 'Speed Glue' era and how ESN was developed. Also a
fascinating biography of
Jurgen Persson the Peter Pan of modern Table Tennis. Very
absorbing.

Bibliography: No. 334 Title: TABLE TENNIS AMONG JEWS IN
POLAND Author: Wieslaw Pieta Publisher: Drukarnia
Garmond, Poland Year of
Publication: 2009 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages: 173
Source: BH No.302 Comment: A Polish book translated into English. My
views regarding the Hungarian Jewish
book No 321 and this one still appertain, However, it remains a
mystery why the
Jewish minority in both Poland and Hungary managed to
produce a statistically high
number of champions. I particularly enjoyed the story of Alojzy
Ehrlich whom I had the
honour of meeting in
1977.

Bibliography: No. 335 Title: BREAKING 2000 Author: Alex Polyakov
Publisher: Table Tennis Achievements
Publishing, USA Year of Publication: 2011 Cover: Soft Laminated Cover Pages: 140 Source: BH No.304 Comment: All books should be as enjoyable as this one. A
highly readable account of a beginners rise
up the
ladder to a very respectable standard of play. Full of useful
tips and homilies. The US
Rating System has many advantages, but for the UK their
system of Ranking points is scored
totally differently and I have no doubt that other
countries have their own systems. I wonder if
the concept of targetting 2000 ranking points as achievements
might restrict the books
attraction to the US only. |
